Whole of Government Cyber Security Standards Must Lift

Today’s revelations about the extent of cyber espionage attacks on the Australian Government showed any government agency could be a national security risk, no matter how small, Macquarie Government Managing Director, Aidan Tudehope said.

Interconnected modern communications networks meant one person’s lack of vigilance was another’s vulnerability, he said.

“No agency or business is an island, and ‘bad actors’ in cyber space are increasingly adept at finding weak links and then hopping from one IT system to another, digging out national and trade secrets along the way.

“This report shows why it is so disturbing that there are still government agencies struggling to meant basic cyber ‘hygiene’ standards and all agencies must step up,” Mr Tudehope said.

“Some still do not comply with the guidance and minimum baselines of the Government’s own experts.

“Whether this is caused by a lack of awareness or lack of resources, this report rings the bell for urgent action.

“Governments must lead the way and set an example for the private sector, which means agencies, and Government owned enterprises of all sizes and at all levels – including state governments —need to step up,” Mr Tudehope said.

“The Government, led by the PM’s Cyber Advisor, Alastair MacGibbon, should be praised for shining a light on the issue, including elevating the conversation across the nation.

“The key is now getting comprehensive action from agencies to step up and treat cyber security with the sense of urgency that the threat demands.”
