NSW Leads the Way for States On Cyber Security

The appointment of Maria Milosavljevic as the first state government Chief Information Security Officer was an important milestone and step toward making a raised cyber security stance a truly national mission, Macquarie Government managing director Aidan Tudehope said today.

“The Federal Government released the latest Cyber Security Strategy almost a year ago, and, as a provider of security services to many Federal agencies, we have seen the ‘green shoots’ of a cultural shift in Canberra,” Mr Tudehope said.

Agencies were increasingly understanding that cyber security had to be at the centre of digital transformation, and keeping citizens’ information safe.

“However, while the Federal Government acknowledges there is a long way to go, the risks have not received the same attention at the state level.

“The appointment of Maria – who has had a distinguished track record at Austrac – is as injection of Federal expertise into NSW, and is an exciting development,” Mr Tudehope said.

It is important that other states now get the message because cyber security was a responsibility, Mr Tudehope said.

“We have said time and again that our cyber security is only as strong as the weakest link in the digital chain, and right now, the states and territories risk leaving the back door open to malicious actors.

Leveraging the skills and systems of the Federal Government is the quickest, cheapest and most effective way of rapidly improving the situation, he said.
