10 Common Misconceptions About Hybrid Cloud
Authored by Stuart Mills, Head of Solutions Marketing, Hosting
Here are the 10 common misconceptions about the Hybrid Cloud, debunked for you:
The Hybrid Cloud is Not Reliable
Whilst Public Clouds on their own are not always reliable, by maintaining workloads in your Private Cloud, and using a Public Cloud or Virtual Private Cloud to connect to, the Hybrid Cloud is actually more reliable than most other platforms. By deploying workloads across 2 different clouds in separate locations, you increase resiliency as well as resource scalability.
You Can’t Control Your Own Data in the Cloud
Many people are concerned about moving to the cloud because they don’t like the idea of their data being stored offsite. They believe that the company managing their cloud will also be in control of their data, or will at least be able to access it. In a Hybrid Cloud, you can maintain sensitive data in your own Private Cloud, and move less sensitive information to the Public Cloud. You can also limit access to internal staff if needed.
The Public Cloud is Cheaper Than the Hybrid Cloud
This is now largely known not to be the case. Permanent and predictable workloads that are “always on” may well be run for a lower OPEX in a Private Cloud, whereas temporary or bursts of workloads can definitely be run for less in a Public Cloud using a PAYG model. By employing a Hybrid Cloud design, you can achieve the best of both worlds.
Your Data is Not Secure in the Cloud
Security of your data in the public cloud is not 100% controllable by you, however the availability of a wide range of security options in the Cloud may make it more secure than an in-house offering. By using Hybrid Cloud architecture, you can put your most important information in the most secure location – be that your own Private Cloud, or the Public.
You Can Use the Public Cloud for Anything You Need
The public cloud has limitations in bandwidth and storage capacity. If a lot of users are trying to access it at once, you might not be able to get onto it for a while. With the Hybrid Cloud, you are working in a cloud environment that is set up just for your company, based on your company’s specifications. You will always have the bandwidth and capacity you need, all the time. Your cloud computing experience is virtually limitless with the Hybrid Cloud.
Regulatory Compliance is Impossible in the Cloud
Public Cloud compliances are improving regularly as their design becomes more stringent, however they are not where they need to be for highly compliant designs (e.g. Government security) and so making use of a custom-designed Private Cloud that can be certified will get around this problem, where those workloads cannot be run in the generic Public Cloud.
Large Amounts of Data Cannot Be Moved in the Cloud
Again, this is a public cloud issue, not a Hybrid Cloud issue. The customisation of the Hybrid Cloud means you will always be able to move as much data as you need. There are no limits.
The Hybrid Cloud is Only for Big Businesses
The fact is businesses of all sizes from small to medium to large are using the Hybrid Cloud with great success.
A Hybrid Cloud Can Be Created Using a One-Size-Fits-All Approach
The Hybrid Cloud is a customised cloud by nature. One size never fits all with the Hybrid Cloud. You need to design it to fit your business’s unique needs, and your managed services company will help you.
If You Lose Your Data in the Cloud, You Can’t Get It Back
Retrieving data from the Public Cloud may cost you exit fees for traffic, or may be difficult for high volumes of data as generally only the Internet is available for the transport of the data. By making use of the Hybrid model you can keep large datasets on the Private element to avoid this problem, whilst still maximising the benefits of the Public Cloud for other data.
